On Saturday night, I braved the cold to shoot a show featuring Big Freedia, DJ Rusty Lazer, Nicky Da B and Shane Shane at Brooklyn Bowl. The show started after midnight and three artists on the bill are from New Orleans and create music that is known as “bounce”. Bounce shows are an insane amount of fun since it features a lot of dancing (mostly booty shaking) and audience participation is encouraged. By the end of the night, a good portion of the crowd danced on stage with Big Freedia and Rusty Lazer. By the time I left at 3AM, Rusty Lazer was DJing (playing Le Tigre’s “Deceptacon”) with lots of audience members dancing along.
The above gallery features the emcee Shane Shane (who performed a couple of songs in between acts), Nicky Da B and the headliner, Big Freedia. Additional photos from the night are available on Flickr and will be posted to Impose Magazine soon.
Here’s an NYT article that discusses bounce music and follows two of the most well known artists, Big Freedia and Katy Red.
